Good news everyone! The interview Beth and I did on SecondCast is now live! You can hop on over to secondcast.com or listen to it below.

One of the major topics we talked about was the Newseum. The Newseum is an interactive history of news museum currently being constructed in Washington D.C. When it opens later this year, the 250,000 square foot building will offer the history of news with state-of-the-art technology and interactive hands-on exhibits.

The plan is to bring many of the exhibits within the RL Newseum into the virtual world of SecondLife. This includes the ability to read 500+ front-page newspapers in world keep up to date on current events, browse a Pulitzer Prize photo gallery, and so much more.

Newseum Rendering

The opening of the Newseum sim inside SecondLife is not yet set, but Beth and I are currently working on the sim. The building is highly influenced by the architecture of the real life building and various artist renderings. We’ve also thrown in a few really cool design elements that we can’t wait to share with everyone!

Sculpted prims come to SecondLife

So, what exactly is a sculpted prim you say? It’s a normal prim, but a texture map determines its shape rather than just cube, spheres, and torus. Makes a lot of sense right? Basically, you can take a texture like this:
Apple Texture Map

And turn it into this one prim apple:
Rendered Apple

A better example with more detail and more prims is this Patrick from Sponge Bob Square Pants:
Sculpted Patrick

This video shows this in auction.

This is really a big change for SecondLife. It means curved corners on boxes and shapes that are more organic. It should allow 3D artists who work in Maya or 3ds max to bring their work to SecondLife much easier. A whole group of artists and content creators that have avoided coming in world now may have that option, with Linden Labs providing an export tool.

The possible down side is that all the people who have spent countless hours learning the SL build tools may fall behind the curve if they don’t keep pace with this new method.

Overall, I think this is good for the SecondLife community as it may open up a completely new world of creativity and art in the game

With all the talk of Pemberley in our blog, it was very nice to see a friend of ours make use of the sim. A long time friend and fashion designer, Nicky Ree, has a new gown for sale called “Spring Romance”. If you look at the picture here, maybe you’ll notice Nicky used the tulip garden at The Villages at Pemberley as her backdrop. I can’t wait for the release of this elegant dress! If you’re not familiar with her store, be sure to visit Nicky Ree’s Boutique in Deimos.

Last night was the grand opening of the newly created sim by EB Creations, Pemberley. Beth and I wanted to thank everyone who stopped by to show support for our latest endeavor, it was wonderful to see everyone having a great time. For those of you who didn’t have a chance to stop by, you missed the lovely and talented Smily Raymaker performing live and DJ Gaston Magneto spinning for us all night long. Thank you both so very much for keeping us entertained.

The grand opening was officially a success and Pemberley was a hit! If you or your friends are looking for rentals, send them to Pemberley.

Our latest project, Pemberley, is now open to the Public.  We will be hosting a grand opening on April 24th at 5pm SL time.  The homes are not yet available for rent, but the sim is public so feel free to explore. :-)

Inspired by the beauty of Jane Austen’s writings, Villages at Pemberley was lovingly created to combine a bit of luxury with a lot of comfort in a friendly neo-urban community with a nod to its historical influence.

Pemberley is a serene residential island with distinctive custom homes, elegant parks, and great boutiques, complete with a first-class neighborhood clubhouse for all residents to enjoy–whether it’s coffee by day or dancing by night.
